One of the first concentration camps of the K.u.K. Monarchy was originally positioned on the grounds of the airport in Graz today. The orthodox priest Maxim Sandowicz was one of the over 2000 people assassinated in the camp. In Chien-Chi Changs film “Thalerhof”, which was part of the group work “WW1” by Magnum Photos, Sandowicz’ great granddaughter tells his story. The film intertwines video recordings of the present-day airport with “ghost images” from the past. It compares the great-grandfather with the girl who oscillates between condolence and distance. The result is an impressive documentation of a tragic family story of the 20th century.
“Thalerhof” was produced in close cooperation with Magnum photographer Chien-Chi Chang. Prismago was responsible for the cut.
