FILM
One of the first concentration camps of the k.u.k. Monarchy was originally located on the grounds of todays airport in Graz. An orthodox priest known as Maxim Sandowicz was one of over 2000 people assassinated in the camp. In Chien-Chi Chang’s film “Thalerhof”, which was part of the group project “WW1” by Magnum Photos, Sandowicz’s great granddaughter tells his story. The film intertwines video recordings of the present-day airport with “ghost images” from the past. It compares the great-grandfather with the girl who oscillates between condolence and distance. The result is an impressive documentation of a tragic fate of the 20th century.
